Why the Table Matters

The table steadies and grounds the family like an anchor.

The dinner table is a constant in a family’s life. Everyone needs to eat and most evenings, the table is one of the few places where everyone gathers at the same time. It steadies and grounds the family like an anchor.

For our family, family dinner was where we connected each day. It’s where we heard about what happened at school or at practice. It’s where we recognized when one kid was out of sorts or when a relationship between siblings needed reconciliation. It’s where we laughed, shared a love for good food, and simply stayed connected to one another.

Over time, the table became more than a place to eat. It became a place where faith and values were passed on, love was experienced, and connection became a priority.

For me, feeding my family has always been about more than the food. It’s one of the ways I express my love and care for them.

I hope they remember the traditions, the laughter, the good food, and the love we shared.

That’s why I believe the dinner table matters.

The Crowded Table Way

Gather. Connect. Cultivate.

The table is more than a place to eat. It’s a place to come together, be present with one another, and intentionally shape the family you’re becoming.

Gather

Make the effort to come together because it matters.

Create a rhythm and an expectation. Know that there’s always an open seat at the table—for family, friends, and guests.

Connect

Be present to one another.

Put the phones away. Listen. Ask questions. Make room for hard conversations as well as laughter.

Cultivate

Plant the seeds of the family you want to become.

Sow seeds of love, generosity, forgiveness, faith, purpose, and belonging. Over time, those seeds grow into traditions, values, memories, and family culture.

Start Here

Start small. Keep showing up.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to create a rhythm of coming back to the table.

01

Set an expectation

Decide how often your family can realistically sit down and eat together. Start with three nights, maybe five. Set a dinner time, and those who can make it, do. Create a rhythm your family can count on.

02

Make dinner

Choose a few recipes from the website or some of your own family favorites. Keep it simple. Dinner doesn’t have to be complicated or fancy.

03

Be present

Make the table a screen-free space. Put the phones away and give yourselves the opportunity to actually be together. Listen to what’s happening in one another’s lives.

04

Take a moment to give thanks

Maybe your family already has a meal prayer or gratitude tradition. Or maybe this is where you begin one. Maybe it’s a simple, “What are you thankful for today?”

05

Start a conversation

You don’t need a stack of conversation cards to connect. Start with one question. Ask about the day. Listen to the answers. Laugh together. Make room for the hard conversations as well as the joyful ones.

Let the ordinary moments become the memories.
From Our Table to Yours

Make the time you have matter.

The time our children are in our homes is so very limited. We want to make that time matter—to slow down, pay attention, and prioritize what is most important.

Crowded Table is here to make that a little easier—with simple recipes, meaningful conversations, family traditions, and practical ideas to help you be intentional about the family you’re building.

The Heart Behind Crowded Table

It started around our own table.

I’ve always loved having people in our home. Feeding people is one of the ways I naturally express love, and I’ve always wanted our home to be a place where people feel welcome, safe, and cared for.

While raising our four children, I’ve seen firsthand how the ordinary time around the table can become some of the most meaningful time a family shares. And as my children have grown older and begun leaving home, I’ve found myself thinking even more about what I hope they carry with them.

Our name, Crowded Table, was inspired by the song of the same name. The lyrics beautifully capture so much of what I’d hoped our home would be: a place where everyone is welcome and everyone belongs, a safe haven with a table that keeps bringing us back together.

When I was praying about what this next stage in life might have for me, the Lord put the idea of Crowded Table on my heart.

And it felt like an invitation to take something I’ve always cared deeply about and share it with other families.
